Love Is Blind (Date)

Courtney, Cure Complete MGD Contest Series
Miller Genuine Draft ended its 1998 Blind Date Contest series by filling the London Forum with British larger louts, drunken American fratboy types and the women who love them, all of whom caught a special unannounced performance of Hole and the Cure Sun., Oct. 11. Courtney Love did her best to rouse the Brits in the crowd, much to the amusement of bandmates Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf Der Maur and new drummer Samantha Maloney. Robert Smith led the Cure through a langthy set of newer psychedelic-sounding material and old favourites. Also in attendance (but not performing) was Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, who was overcome by radio-station vermin asking if he knew who was playing prior to the announcement (he was there to visit his buddy Courtney). But according to A.P. photographer Joshua Kessler, the American contest winners were the best entertainers. "There was one drunk guy on the plane who was running around with a loaf of French bread he was asking everyone to sign," Kessler says. "So the passengers nicknamed him Loaf." Later at the Forum, Loaf was spotted running around shirtless with the bottom half of a female mannequin. "There were also these two 'winners' on the plane trip to London ruminating on who the acts were going to be," says Kessler. "They were saying such intelligent stuff as 'It might be Pink Floyd; maybe Clapton.' When I reminded them that Modern Rock stations were sponsoring the contest, and that it wouldn't make sense for those people to play, they said, 'They need somebody that's gonna please all these people here, dude.'" Billy Corgan was unavailable for comment.

NME reports:

HOLE SECRET LONDON DATE
HOLE played a secret gig at the London Kentish Town Forum on Sunday night October 11 supporting THE CURE, their first UK gig since the release of LP 'Celebrity Skin' last month. It was organised by Miller Genuine Draft who have run similar blind dates in the US recently with acts including Garbage, Foo Fighters and Supergrass. Many of the hundreds in the audience had won their tickets via a competition run on NME.com and in NME. The gigs are kept a closely guarded secret until the night, the audience having no idea in advance who is playing or what venue they are at. It's a way of having bands who would normally sell out stadiums and larger venues play to crowds in club sized venues. Dressed in a black see-through top and hipsters, Courtney Love greeted a delighted and surprised crowd, who had no idea who was playing, with "You didn't think it would be us, did you?" before launching into their recent hit 'Celebrity Skin'. The band played an hour long set composed mainly of tracks from the new album, plus new single 'Malibu'. At one point, after a request from a crowd member, she bared her breast after teasing "I'm not showing them until you lot get a lot louder!" She also taunted the crowd by teetering on the edge of the stage as if to crowdsurf, before saying "I can't do that shit anymore, 'cos first of all you'd break my fucking arms nowadays".

Sonicnet has an article about the secret show Hole played on October 11th in London, opening for The Cure. (Thanks Nanna!) Read the full story from Sonicnet.

Thanks to Guillermo (who has a Courtney Love Page) for this! Not exactly new news but The Den's article about the show clearly shows they have their minds somewhere else:

COURTNEY LOVE GETS HER TITS OUT FOR THE LADS
Hole played a surprise gig and Love surprised the audience with a little "Celebrity Skin" Hole played a secret gig in London last Sunday night in support of The Cure as part of the Miller Genuine Draft Blind Date series. The gig, which occurred at the London Kentish Town Forum, was Hole's first UK gig since the release of their Celebrity Skin album. Courtney Love, dressed in a see-through black top and hip-huggers, lived up to the album's title when, after a request from the audience, she teased, "I'm not showing them until you lot get a lot louder!" according to the NME. The she really did flash them a bit of breast. She also made like she was going to dive into the audience for a little crowd surfing, before pulling back and saying saucily, "I can't do that shit anymore, because first of all you'd break my fucking arms nowadays." As opposed to Courtney having other people's arms broken? Get it — Courtney Love is a powerful and vindictive person. Hey, just kidding Courtney!
