Reviews

From AATHW:

Performances began on the village stage at 1:00 pm ET and on the main stage at 3:00 pm. It rained on and off all day which delayed Silverchair's set by about 45 minutes. This was the rainiest Edgefest of all Edgefests combined and many of the performers thanked the audience for roughing it out in the wind, rain, and mud. Finally, after Silverchair, the clouds parted and the rest of the evening was dry. Now to Hole:

Hole took to stage at about 10:45 pm. The stage darkened and the intro "and I will awake" played over the speakers. The band came out, Courtney wearing a pink dress and butterfly wings which she later removed. Then they played "Violet". After the song, Courtney proclaimed, "We are Helix (an old Canadian band). Do you believe me? Here is my penis. We are Helix!" Most of this was lost on the audience.

The band then went on to play "Awful", changing a couple lyrics such as "you're ripe for the fucking it's so awful" and "if the world is so wrong you can fuck them all with one song". Courtney was her usual self, with one leg up on the speakers, standing on top of them, going into the crowd to shake hands and to pick out audience members to join them onstage throughout the night. After the song, Courtney said, "Excuse me - Canadian content," and pointed to Melissa who wore a Canadian version of the Wonder Woman outfit and had a Canadian flag draped over an amp. Courtney then said, "Proof that the free trade agreement WORKS!" Melissa said, "We also brought you rain and rain and rain all the way from California." Courtney then went back to the Helix thing and said, "Remember when we said we were Helix? What we really meant was we were Saga (probably another Canadian band)." She was teasing the audience with all these Canadian references all night. Someone also threw a toy on stage which Courtney picked up and said, "Thank you for the Beanie Baby. This is the one I don't have so I really appreciate it - A tie-dye Beanie baby." She then looks at Melissa who is holding another item thrown onstage. Courtney goes, "And thank you for the panties, that's nice!" which everyone laughed at. Then they played "Pretty on the Inside" and "Heaven Tonight".

After the song, Melissa said, "So 132 years of the best country on earth. Whoa!" Courtney said to the crowd, "Well you sure are cuter than the Germans, man. We just did a German festival and you guys are so pretty and nice! Fine, if you don't fucking believe me, play a show in New York, okay? I would like to tell you that I am a world-renowned rock star and I've been all around the world and I see audiences every night. You are very very attractive, I swear to god." This drew cheers. "Maybe it's your water but you're all just really cute." Then she goes, "Wanna hear a song?" and they play "Miss World".

Courtney then looks at the group she has pulled up on stage, "This is our big audience and this is our little audience." and asks them if any of them can sing, saying, "Come on, don't be Canadian, be ambitious!" and picks up a girl who says she can sing. Courtney warns her, "Only if you can sing or I'll kick you off." They play "Reasons to be Beautiful". Someone threw a plastic bottle on stage during the song and Courtney said, "If you throw one more fucking bottle, child, I will leave, okay? That's one more of these fucking bottles, you little shit - and I know you're male and you're probably wearing a fucking Metallica shirt - I will leave, UNLESS of course I can find you and guess what? I'll beat you up, okay? One more bottle, I'll kick your ass. Right here, you motherfucker. You're probably this big, right?" Everyone loved this!

Then they delivered an extended version of "Malibu" where Courtney sang something during the intro and at the end they repeated "Hey baby, I'm gonna rescue you and set you free tonight" several times and ended with a few more "I can't be near you the light just radiates." AND, I don't remember but I think this is the song where all the confetti came down. Then they did "Dying".

After "Dying" they weren't sure what song to do next, Courtney telling Eric that it was late and the audience wanted to hear something pretty. Melissa began talking to the crowd, "It took us 4 years, 5 years for us to come back to you and we excuse ourselves and it took my whole life to go across Canada with the Edgefest, it really did! And I thank you Oooh Canada. I miss you!" Courtney then goes, "Alright Melissa, can we play a song about fucking please? Melissa wrote a song - Canadian content - about fucking." Melissa goes, "That's what we need." They play "Use Once and Destroy" and after Courtney says, "Hey guys. I know it's late I know you waited a long time AND I know you're having a really good time." And everyone cheered. She teased that the next song was written by Geddy Lee so everyone thought they were going to do a Rush song but they ended up doing "Doll Parts". But before the song, Courtney said they were dedicating the song to Celebrity Skin produced Michael Beinhorn was present that night. She said, "You know what he did? He held me over his lap and spanked me! He's the only man that ever did that. It felt kinda good. I'm used to spanking boys and he spanked me. It was cool."

Then the surprise cover of the night came. After Courtney took a sweater from a girl on stage, Melissa led in a version of "Summer of '69" changing the lyric to "Summer of '99". Courtney then commented how Bryan Adams is underrated and how his songs are mainstream but very good. Their last song was "Boys on the Radio" but Courtney forgot and moments later, after telling Beinhorn that her bridge to the song was better, she exclaimed, "Oh! Good night," and went off stage.

A couple minutes later, one of the fans went up on stage and said, "They can't hear you," which drew cheers. Courtney and Eric came back out for the encore, Courtney said that there were so many guys at the front where in every other country, the girls fight to get to the front, commenting, "If Melissa can get the fuck out of Canada, you can get to the front." Then they played "Northern Star", Courtney telling everyone to look at the moon. Then Samantha and Melissa came back out and Courtney went looking into the audience again and asked for a certain blond boy which took the security minutes to find. Meanwhile, Melissa proclaimed it to be sing-along time and did a little bit of Helix's "Rock You". It went something like this: "Give me an R! O! C! K! What you got? ROCK! What you gonna do? ROCK YOU!" Courtney joined in and yelled, "Give me an H! Give me an O! Give me an L! E! What are we? HOLE!" The bodyguards finally got the kid and the band did "Celebrity Skin" to close the night. Courtney sang a little thing at the end with Eric's guitar wailing in the background while Melissa gave picks to the fans onstage. When they finished, Courtney asked for a guitar backstage and handed it to the blond kid, saying, "You are the first boy I have ever given a guitar to. Don't sell it." And then they left with the "Malibu" remix playing over the speakers.
